Houston, Feb. 6, 2014 -- Sysco Corporation (NYSE: SYY) today launched its updated sustainability report, which focuses on the company’s economic, environmental and social responsibility performance during Fiscal Year 2013 (FY13).
The report, titled “Sustainable Practices Drive Customer Success,” outlines Sysco’s strategic approach to sustainability, including its guiding principles and three focus areas of food, operations and community. Some performance highlights from the FY13 report include:
- Participated for the first time in the Carbon Disclosure Project, which will help the company identify opportunities to lower its carbon footprint, reduce water use and enhance water quality.
- Committed to ensure 100 percent of the palm oil in Sysco Brand products will be certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil by 2020.
- Began implementation of improved routing technology designed to reduce distribution road miles. Sysco operating companies involved in the initial rollout have reduced mileage more than projected.
- Achieved an additional 3 percent in incremental energy intensity savings across its broadline and SYGMA operations.
“As Sysco continues to grow and the globalization of our world’s food systems increases, sustainability becomes more critical to our business – and we see great business value in it,” said Bill DeLaney, president and chief executive officer for Sysco Corporation. “Many of the same practices that deliver the best quality, nutrition and service to our customers at the lowest total cost also benefit the environment, promote economic vitality and serve the community.
“While we are pleased with our progress, more work lies ahead. We will continue to further refine our strategy, reduce our environmental footprint and increase our positive social impact, all the while looking for new, innovative ways to further embed sustainability into our culture and business operations,” he said.
